Impossibilities
Impossibility Press is the name for the one-man band that is me, Gina Minor Allen. Under the name of Impossibility Press I published my children’s book There’s an Alligator in Audubon Park!. I also publish prints of my drawings and paintings and my ceramics and sculpture.
I named my business Impossibility Press, because being a creative in this world is a nearly impossible task – in this space, I work to make the impossible happen.
My work centers on contemporary representations of African American and Creole culture, with an emphasis on bold, colorful, and positive portrayals of women and community life. Rooted in five generations of Louisiana heritage, my practice draws inspiration from local spaces, storytelling, and everyday interactions.
A central challenge in my work is creating a modern visual symbolism— imagery that honors cultural memory and lived experience while moving beyond overused icons often used represent Louisiana and our people. I aim to develop symbols that feel authentic, layered, and relevant to our community.
My digital work Rue de la Course, inspired by an Uptown coffee shop, depicts a vibrant scene of people engaging with one another in a shared public setting. Magnolia is a sculptural work in which magnolia seed pods replace Bantu knots, referencing cultural memory, identity, and place.
